Still working on a mantra, but I think I'm getting there: Learn, Teach, Advocate. Or maybe Knowledge Is Power. (Actually, it's the source of power, but why be picky.) Sometimes I try Knowledge Empowered, to see how it rolls off my tongue. Lord knows I believe it! (Besides, it fits with everything I do.)

Goodness, I've already been recruited! I'm probably one of the oldest new SLA members--I joined three years ago (I think) after being on the mailing list for quite a while--and have been an MLA member for ten years, an ALA member for thirty years (yep, you got that right), an associate member of AIIP for two or three years, and a member of various organizations relevant to my fields: history and genealogy, and medicine and consumer-health information. Can I afford all this? I think so: the networking opportunities have already made themselves evident. Do I have a resume? No. I have four, or maybe five, and I walk around with a copy of each of them, although I just got spaghetti sauce on the upper left corner of (groan) every one and will have to reprint them. I'm not sure how that happened but I can always blame the cat, whose dietary preferences, which I do not indulge, tell me he thinks he's a goat. I've just gotten my first article published on the SLA Philadelphia chapter website; it's a write-up of the conference for the next AIIP "Connections," and while I may have to shorten it for that newsletter, Robert Guerrero was pleased enough to post it "as is" right after I sent it to him for his comments! Honestly, I should have joined SLA years ago. Better late than way too late.

I like it all! The key there is MEANING. Sometimes I think of it as responding to a calling. Why do I spend much of my off-work time and energy in consumer-health information? It's because we need to advocate for ourselves and help our overworked doctors help us. Why do I think history and genealogy are important? It's because if we humans know where we've been, we can figure out where we should and shouldn't be going, and genealogy is the personal side of history, the side that tells us that we should all be proud of our heritage, even though, back up our family trees, there are people whose actions we shouldn't emulate as well as those we revere as role models. Only one thing: every time I see Kawasaki's name, I think of motorcycles. You know, those loud, shiny things that make Philadelphia even noisier than it already has to be. Oh well. What's in a name, right? Besides, some of those vehicles are truly gorgeous.
